University of Chicago Opens the Center for Spatial Data Science

One new offering from the University of Chicago is the Center for Spatial Data Science. This center will be used to observe and analyze special data sets in fields such as health care, real estate, and social networks. The center will do this by offering ways to measure space between things; this space could be between people, between buildings, between education centers or health care centers, and much more.


The Center for Spatial Data Science combines geography, proximity, and other location-based measures that can be analyzed and recorded. The center will be used for students and researchers who are seeking to answer unique questions using special data, and the center’s revolutionary existence will assist with answering those questions. The University of Chicago and the Center for Spatial Data Science’s director are both committed to innovation in research, culminating in new ways of working and analysing data sets.

The Center for Spatial Data Science is run within the Computation Institute due to its focus on computational analyses. The Center will also be working in partnership with other programs at the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago is expanding its computational and spatial studies offerings that now include a master’s degree in computational social science.

The Center for Spatial Data Science will allow for the expansion of data driven research into fields that have traditionally been considered ‘soft’ sciences. Using satellites and geography can allow social scientists and other researchers the ability to put data towards their social theories and research in ways that haven’t been available before.
