Yahoo! has announced the service closure of several of its Maps APIs starting September 13, 2011. The restructure, according to Yahoo!, is due to its reprioritizing of its “current portfolio of mapping products to refocus on a great consumer Mapping and Local Search experience.” Developers are encouraged to continue to use Yahoo!’s Placefinder API for geocoding, our Local Search API and Placemaker for geoparsing.
The list of Maps APIs that are closing:
- ActionScript 2 & 3 (Flash APIs)
- AJAX Maps 3.6, 3.7, 3.8
- REST API (Map Image API)
- Simple API – (No coding)
- GeoRSS – Version 2
Tied in with Yahoo!’s partnership with Nokia, more developments will be announced later this year. There is a Q&A about the closures on the Yahoo! Developer Network blog.
