The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) is seeking candidates for the inaugural GISP certification exam. About five years ago, GISCI began exploring changing the requirements for obtaining a GISP from its portfolio-only based requirements. After launching a formal review in 2011, GISCI finally announced earlier this year that it would be adding an examination component to the GISP process. This change puts the GISP inline with other certification processes such as Esri’s Technical certifications.
The first examinations will take place during the week of November 12 to 17, 2015. Formerly titled GISCI Geospatial Core Technical Knowledge Exam® for the GISP Certification, the application period for the exam will be opened from September 21 to October 9, 2015.
Registering for the inaugural exam is open to all, but GISCI is particularly looking for candidates that can satisfy the the Portfolio Review requirements at the time of the exam. From the GISCI: “For those qualified individuals who pass the exam and complete their Portfolio Review, either prior to or within one year of the exam, GISCI will reimburse the $ 100 Application Fee and the $ 100 Portfolio Review Fee.”
The exam will test on a variety of geospatial knowledge areas including:
- Cartography and Visualization
- GIS Design Aspects and Data Modeling
- GIS Analytical Methods
- Data Manipulation
- Geospatial Data
The exam is being administered by third party testing company, PSI.
