For most active in the GIS community, Atanas Entchev is a familiar presence.  An owner of a GIS firm for decades, Atanas is also very active online.  He serves on the advisory board for GeoHipster and is an active presence on social media.  Atanas also designed the logo for GIS Lounge.

The Entchev family has been struggling for over 25 years to solidify their residency in the United States.  Many of you were generous when Atanas’ family was detained in 2011.  They were successful in receiving waivers for Atanas and his wife.  His son, Eni, had checked in for his annual visit in November to ICE when he was detained and deported.

The deportation and the Atanas family story has been covered by the Asbury Park Press and radio station New Jersey 101.5.  Atanas also explains the situation in this phone-in interview with New Jersey 101.1:

Eni’s deportation also reached Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon, R-Monmouth who tweeted:

You can help Atanas with the legal fight to reunite his family by contributing to the  Eni Entchev’s Legal Fund GoFundMe.  A message from Eni on the support received so far:

Hello everyone, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who supported me it is shocking and truly heart-warming to see how many people care about my situation and how many people are willing to help out. I feel what happened is truly unjust and I look forward to righting this wrong and the fact that so many people stand behind me is truly amazing and to be frank very shocking! I never thought so many people would care about me and my deportation but you all have restored my faith in humanity!! I look forward to my return and will have every single one of you to thank for it. I appreciate you all more than I could put in words!

Have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!!!
