GIS Tutorial for Python Scripting is a new release from Esri Press.  This workbook contains hands-on programming exercises to familiarize GIS users with scripting using Python, particularly within the ArcGIS environment.

Python is used within ArcGIS to script geoprocessing functions and tasks such as automating workflows or customizing ArcGIS through custom menus and add-ins.  This tutorial helps provide GIS users with the skills needed use Python to make workflows in ArcGIS for Desktop more efficient and create scripts to automate repetitive tasks.  Some prior experience using ArcGIS for Desktop is required for this tutorial book. The book comes with exercise data is provided and instructors can request supplemental resources for coursework.

The python tutorial book was written by David W. Allen, the GIS Manager for the City of Euless, Texas.  Allen has also taught at Tarrant County College, helping to create the first GIS degree program in Texas.  Previously, Allen has authored  GIS Tutorial 2: Spatial Analysis Workbook (Esri Press, 2013) and Getting to Know ArcGIS ModelBuilder (Esri Press, 2011) and coauthored GIS Tutorial 3: Advanced Workbook (Esri Press, 2011).
