Now is the time to start considering internship opportunities in GIS. A couple of innovative summer programs that are available each year are Azavea’s Summer of Maps and Google’s Summer of Code.
Summer of Maps
The Summer of Maps program by Azavea matches student interns with non-profits with geospatial analysis needs. The program is 12-weeks long and a stipend of $6,000 is provided to participants. Participants work out of Azavea’s Philadelphia office full-time during the program period which starts in June. Applicants must be full-time or part-time students. More information about qualifications and requirements is on the fellows guideline page. Azavea’s Summer of Maps deadline is closing soon with a deadline of March 10th, 2019.

Summer of Code
Google’s Summer of Code matches students from around the world with mentor organizations. 207 open source projects were select for the 2019 summer program. Included on the list are geospatial organizations OSGeo and OpenStreetMap. Other mentor organization such as PySAL are offering opportunities to work on geospatial projects.
Applications for Google’s Summer of Code are open between March 25, 2019 and Tuesday, April 9, 2019.
