Gretchen Peterson, who has authored The Cartographer’s Toolkit and GIS Cartography, recently announced that the inaugural GIS Appreciation has been set for March 2, 2016.

Inspired by Squirrel Appreciation Day which is celebrated on January 21st each year, GIS Appreciation Day is envisioned as a day to highlight “fantastic map finds, funny GIS memes, and just about anything that you can think of” via social media.

Those that want to participate can do so simply by tweeting, instagramming, or posting via other social media platforms such as Facebook or Google+ geospatial tidbits using the hashtag #GISAppreciationDay.
